Teritory: Dwarves Of NaragInbar live in the central part of Greymountains. They live in three different themas and those are:

ShadowCliff Thema

Closest to surface, this thema got it’s name from the Shadow Cliff. Shadow Cliff is a name of one of the greatest Cliff in the world. This cliff is more than 3 km high, and windows are all over it. Behind this great wall is Capital City of ShadowCliff thema called Bulthur. Bulthur is trade center for whole dwarven community. Far enough from battlefield and close enough to surface this city is destination for all non-dwarven traders interested in fine dwarven metal and stonework.

Magrontheim Thema

Named after the greatest of all dwarven fortresses Magrontheim this thema is deep in the mountains.

Starspire Thema

Named after great cavern which ceiling is covered with some crystals that shines with some dull light that looks like stars. Starspire is also name of themas capital also known as. Throne City.

Denizens: Dwarves of NaragInbar are all good warriors because they train since they are only 5 years old. When they reach age of adolescent and that is when they are 20 years old they are obligated by law and honor to join army. They must fight in army for 50 years. After that some of them remain solders and that for living and some goes back to their families and continues family business.

The base of dwarven community is a family. Every family consists of many generations of dwarves and older or some other family member that proves himself in community rules them. It is almost rule that newborn members of family become either warriors or they continue family business. It is very rare that a family member starts some other business but it happened.

Families that are in same trade are joined in Esnaph. Every trade has its esnaph on themic level. Once a year similar esnaphs from different themas gather for exchange of newfound techniques and ideas.

Institutions of NaragInbar and Ruling:

Council Of Prefects - It is consisted of three War Prefects which governs three different Themes and a Civil Prefect which duties will be explained later, there is also Silver Shield. Each Prefect has one vote in Council meeting and Silver Shield votes only if it is a deuce. Council is held regularly twice a year and any time there is need. Any prefect can call for a meeting if he thinks that it is necessary. This Council decides about things that are important to whole Dwarven State.
War Prefect - Dwarf in duty for one Thema. He rules the army in his area, decides strategy, orders recruitment, appoint commanders. If War Prefect dies his successor will be his oldest son, brother, or some other member of family if first ones are unavailable. If there is no legal successor Army of Thema elects new War Prefect and Council must approve him.
Civil Prefect - Dwarf that rules in all Themas and governs civil matters like supplies, food, weapons, trade, education, police. It is not unknown that female holds this position. If Civil War Prefect dies his successor will be his oldest son, brother, or some other member of family if first ones are unavailable. If there is no legal successor Council appoints new one.
Silver Shield - Dwarf in charge of The Silver Shield Guard. War Prefects elect him.
Thema - Territory governed by War Prefect. It consists of families that are subjects for taxation and recruitment. Every person is obligate to train some military skill from five years old and when he gets 20 years old he must join army for 50 years, after which he can do whatever he wants. Every family is subject for taxation with regards for their earnings. Every person that is recruited in Thema fights for that Thema which brings out that special motivation of "Defending the Doorstep"
Esnaph Circle - it consists of mightiest esnaph leaders. In times before war this was legislative institution. It pronounced new laws and those were confirmed by king. Also this Circle elected members of civil bureaucracy and formed local authorities, which gave them quite an influence on the kingdom affairs. It also acts as Kings advisor. After the proclamation of war this institution was reduced to advisory organ with no real power but some influence remained due to tradition and respect.

Armed forces of NaragInbar Dwarves:

In general dwarves talk about their armed forces as about army. In reality there are five different and in some way independent groups. There are three different Themas armies, which operates only inside their one thema and only in times of great need sends soldiers to other thema. War Prefect has authority to mobilize up to 90 % of all themas citizens. These dwaves must report as soon as possible in full battle gear. As it is said before all dwarves has duty and honor to serve in army from 20 to 70 years old. When they reach age of 20 they must report to the army with full battle gear. All youth have possibility to earn their gear by joining militia while still on training,
There is Silver Shield Guard, which is mobile elite combat unit under command of Silver Shield. He himself decides where his units will go if there are no orders from the king. And there is militia under command of Civil Prefect.

Each army consists of various units:

Melee infantry:
Biters - plate mail, battle-axe, dagger
Smashers - plate mail, morning star, dagger
Knockers - plate mail, war hammer, dagger
Defending infantry:
Longers - plate mail, long pikes, short sword, buckler
Supporting infantry:
Shooters - chain mail, light crossbow, short sword, small shield
Heavy shooters - chain mail, heavy crossbow, short sword, small shield
Scouts - leather armor, shot sword, buckler, hand crossbow
Artillery:
Ballista crew - studded, short sword, small shield
Engineering:
Engineers - studded, short sword, small shield

Current policy is that there must be one War elementalist in every squad. It is far from reality, but number of elementalists is raising every generation.

Silver Shield Guard - Elite military unit consisted of best warriors from all armies. They are all wearing silver plated shields as signs of honor. They are mobile army, not connected with Themas always fighting on the sight where the need is greatest.

Militia - Consists of War Veterans and the rest are youth still on training. They duties are to maintain order, take care of prisons, foreigners that are going threw dwarven lands.

Guide to NaragInbar Heraldry:

NaragInbar has is own sign and that is a sign of Black Horn in white field surrounded by golden line.

Possibility to combine Black Horn with his one family sign has only royal family and those that are specially granted by royal family. Those that are granted to combine that Sign can’t takes that Sign to grave with them (i.e. that privilege must be earned)

Every Legion has its own Sign

Every Cohort has its own Sign but Sign of Legion must be in upper left corner.

Every Squad has its own Colors but Sign of Legion must be in upper left corner and Cohort Sign must be in lower left. Squad flags are carried by Optios on their back and it serves to commander as reference where is the unit.

When camping, every commander has right to put up two flags; one is family flag that is right and units flag which left.

Heights of the flag are according to rank. Exceptionally commander can honor unit by raising its flag to the height if it’s one or putting it between his family and unit flag.

Economy of NaragInbar:

Economy of NaragInbar has changed much since the War begun. So we must explain what it was like and what it is like now.

Before the War, economy was based on family production. As it is said before all families of same trade were grouped in one esnaph. Every thema has its one esnaphs. Different mining esnaphs sold their products to directly to production esnaphs. These sold their products in their own shops, or they delivered it to trader’s esnaph if those named some good price or expressed great need. Most of the trade is made is with state coins but there was also merchandise exchange if there was need. Traders esnaph had their function as export institutions E.I. they were in charge of trading with other themas and outer races. There were of course some exemption to the rule, for example Breeders Esnapf (they bred Basilisks) offered their products only to state and state paid them for their efforts.

It must be pointed out that there are some trades that are not included in esnaphs. Those are trades that are founded and sponsored by state itself. Those are different clerks, professors on Academy, and similar professions of common interest. Professors on Academy are considered soldiers and have such titles.

Esnaphs of NaragInbar:

Alchemists - chemistry, alchemy, they produce different substances needed in other esnaphs. Their production includes some poisons (primary use for pests control), oil refinement and Greek fire which is of great importance for defense.

Armorers - all kinds of metal armors, even some combination of metal leather armors.

Breeders - small, strictly specified esnaph engaged in breeding Basilisks, their transport and exploitation. They are supported and paid exclusively by state.

Brewers - committed to production of different beverages, mostly beer. Got rich since the war begun since the army is baying all they can produce.

Engineers - dedicated to construction and building this esnaph is one of the cornerstones of defense

Entertainers - not too respected among Outer races this guild was even less respected among Dwarves, however they remain as a bright spot in darkness of war as they are poets, comedians, actors, and storytellers. They reputation grew enormously as Grokjor Songweaver became Tribune and hero of Magrontheim.

Finecutters - precise cutters, gem cutters, engaged in all kinds of stone art.

Food producers - mostly cattle breeders and some agricultural families whose properties are on hidden little valleys in the outer mountain. Among these are even some fungi breeders

Glassware - respected esnaph in ShadowCliff, they are known by they fine art.

Ironware - all other objects made of iron and steel other than weapons and armors.

Leatherwear - objects made of leather including leather armors

Metalminers - strategically important, this esnaph enjoys many benefits from the state and that makes them some problems with others

Metalwork - objects made of metals different than silver, gold and iron.

Clayshapers - specialized in pottery and productions of items made of clay and similar materials.

Stoneminers - divided into many subgroups this esnaph was one of the most numerous in times before war

Tailors - production and exploitation of different clothes mostly from imported materials.

Traders - as noted before, they trade esnaph goods to other themas and outer races. 6 years ago three themas esnaphs united becoming United Trading Esnaph under leadership of very wise and able dwarf Doglar Shinehelm from ShadowCliff.

Waterbringers - esnaph paid by all dwarves and in charge of community needs like water providing, elimination of litter and so. They are also in charge of public baths and similar institutions. It is their plan to bring running water to every house, and they succeeded in ShadowCliff by placing a great reservoir on the upper floors of the city. Water is by a pump that is moved by 20 donkeys bought from Border Elves.

Weaponsmiths - all kind of weapons. Many families joined this esnaph during the War, which made it one of the strongest.

Wireweavers - gold, silver, platinum, all kinds of jewelry and metal art

Taxation:

Regular taxes
Everything that is produced or brought in NaragInbar is subject of taxation except in Setogs of Bazaar when all taxes are withdrawn. Every dwarven or foreign tradesmen living or doing business in NaragInbar must pay 1/12 of its profit to King and State, withholding such wage is a crime subjected to punishment by local authorities according to Law..
Taxes are calculated separately for every esnaph according to their profit and members.
All citizens are either Soldiers (which are free of taxes) or esnaph members.
Taxes are collected every Motog.
Special army taxes:
Esnaphs must provide for all their members in regular army 3sm per Motog.
Esnaph must provide 10 sm for soldiers from their esnaph that is in professional army. That soldier must in return use his free time for the benefit of esnaph. Soldier can reject money from esnaph therefore rejecting the esnaph itself.
Obligate labor:
All citizens are obligate to spend two Setog/Gotog working on Kingdom projects without any material reward. Anyone can pay someone else to do it for him.

 

About time and dates:

In this part, it becomes obvious that Dwarves developed calculus based on 12.

1 Gotog (one year) = 12 Motogs (twelve months) = 60 Setogs = 360 Togs

1 Motog (one month) = 5 Setogs (five weeks) = 30 Togs

1 Setog (one week) = 6 Togs (six days)

1 Tog (one day) = 12 Casdens (twelve times 120 minutes)

1Casden (120 minutes) = 12 Verdens (twelve times 10 minutes)

1 Verden (10 minutes) = 12 dins (twelve times 49,8 seconds)

History of Our Kind:

History of All (The way it All Happened)

In the beginning there was emptiness, not darkness and not light but emptiness, and the Great Spirit was formed out of nothing, for he was part of nothing all the time, because nothing is the same as everything just the opposite, and The Spirit had a power of Thought. Many times has passed and The Spirit which was nothing thought of his opposite and dreamed about everything, in his dream, everything consisted of four elements, and they were Everything and they were together. In that mixture soon the element lords were formed and they lived in peace and harmony dedicated to creation of Spirits Dream. It is said that from this conjunction the Paraelements were born and they were jealous to supreme rule of their parents. They tended to their own worlds opposing current unity. Enraged by this scheme Elements of Fire and Earth rose to destroy Paraelements but were stopped by Air an Water, and that is how the eternal war begun, with the separation of Elements… Separated elements then decided to create things only with their own element trying all the time to prove to the Ghost that they are supreme creators, but, whichever new world was built by a single element, others came to ruin it or to put their own mark, and no world was really pure like they wanted. And competition went on thus creating innumerable number of worlds each a mixture and each empty.

As the time was passing new thought appeared to the Ghost, and that thought spread threw all the elements in his Dream, and all through they didn’t understood it they have done their best to obey it. However this creation, was most difficult so far and element had to ally once more in the job of creation. They had to create Life. Again united elements haven’t forgot what happened before and were still trying to make life more like they are, they were never able to agree what that life should look like, and they were doing it again and again and always somebody put more of it essence in a creation and the others refused it as imperfect Many of them created Minor Elements to look after their creation and moved to another try.

This is the way that our world was made and all the Races and all the Life. It is Earth and Fire that put more of its essence in a first Dwarf and that is why they are our protectors.

It is said that somewhere out there Elements still combine in attempt to create perfect Life and that once they succeed they will end the dream of Ghost and that Ghost will inhabit Life and Nothing and Everything will become one as Dream and Reality merge.

History of War

200 years ago dwarves of NaragInbar lived in harmony. They had very developed economy, permanent peace treaty of goodwill and cooperation with Elven Empire and Centaurs were excellent trading partners. They were one state under reign of one King Kotrel Ironspike.The Bold. There were no real enemies who could challenge dwarves especially on their ground. And then, it all collapsed . . .

-200 Battle of Werdonheim "Blood Pool"

Werdonheim was deep mountain mining post. 4923 dwarves died as Troglodytes burst out of mine shafts and threw walls. The battle was quick and brutal. Dwarves were unprepared, unarmed and unarmored. Troglodytes killed everyone, women, children, elders.

Battle Of StarSpire

Few survivors from Werdonheim fled to Throne City warning everyone to incoming doom. King Kotrel Ironspike gathered army as quickly as possible. Whole army at the time was no more than 10.000 fighters. In rush King gathered only 8.000, many of them came in last moment and entered fight still tired from long forced march.. City was not ready for siege. Many volunteers applied but were poorly armed and armored. Battle was long and bloody. Troglodytes charged in enormous numbers and dwarves stood like they were part of stone city. Finally, after three days and three nights, river of goblioids stopped pouring from now abandoned mines. The live ones left leaving their dead and they were followed only by tired look of surviving dwarves.

Results were shocking: 7.500 of 8.000 soldiers were dead, 12.000 dead volunteers and the death of a King. On the other side, body count revealed about 40.000 dead Troglodytes.

As we know now, gain from that battle was worth its price. That victory destroyed first line of incoming enemy and earned almost half year for Dwarven Empire to consolidate and prepare for new attacks.

However, in that time dwarves were not aware of that and many of them thought that this was first and last attack of these creatures. Esnaph Circle specially promoted this theory and opposing them were few remaining officers and luckily young Prince himself.

Proclamation of King Lorin Ironspike

Esnaph Circle and Army according to succession law proclaimed new king. It was Prince Lorin who already was an army officer and hero of StarSpire battle.

-199 Attack at Redstone Shaft

This attack is like many hundreds of similar attacks in last 200 years but is important, as it is first attack to Magrontheim Thema. Attack took place at red marble query. The wall broke off and Troglodytes attacked. 248 miners died as Sorth Cooperarch broke down supporting column bringing down whole ceiling on friends and enemies alike. That action saved whole post and he was post mortally awarded with Silver Ax medal for bravery.

General mobilization

After Redstone attack, and many similar in StarSpire thema, King Lorin called for general mobilization and creation of Civil Guard in all themas. He was opposed by Esnaph Circle who argued that it was bad for business, that army should handle it but king disregarded their advice and demands. General mobilization is event that marks the beginning of Esnaph Circles power diminishing.

General mobilization meant that all dwarves able to take weapon must purchase one and join Civil Guard until king dismisses them.

Results of such a measure were dubious. At first there were not enough quality weapons and there were even less armors. Dwarves were untrained, prone to mistakes and they died quickly. Economy was almost destroyed ‘couse production was left only for females, youth and elders. No production, no trade proved to bring even greater disaster upon dwarven nation. On the other hand, security did not change too much althorn it improved a bit.

Attack at Drake’s Eye

First attack at ShadowCliff Thema. Attack came from abandoned mine and into the Drake’s Eye cave known by wonderful blue-green lake. 20 young dwarves and their teacher were killed before the civil guard could intervene.

Proclamation of King Lorins Law and establishment of Dwarven War Academy

Need for skilled fighters and able officers were great so by order of is majesty King Lorin Ironspike this academy was established in order to teach, different fighting styles, strategy and other war skills. Later it consumed all other educational institutions and has many different studies in addition to war subjects.

In the light of recent events and current situation and under pressure of Esnaph Circle and Army, king Lorin proclaimed new set of laws whose essence I will try to explain:

  1. All Young dwarves upon reaching 5 years old must join Dwarven War Academy

  2. All Young dwarves upon reaching 20 years must join the Army and remain there for 50 years. They must report with full battle suit, including armor and weapon.

  3. All abandoned mines to be sealed immediately

  4. Dwarves that are now in Civil Guard are to take four months shifts in it.

  5. All dwarves must carry weapon any time they live their home and they must be allowed into all buildings.

-198 Ten mines sweep

Ten different mines in different parts of kingdom were attacked almost at same time.

First mine crisis

After teen mines sweep took place. King ordered temporary closing of all mines. Esnaph Circle protested and some even disobeyed. King punished dissidents and decided that civilians should be no longer lower to rule.

Proclamation of War and founding of War Council.

Proclamation of law degraded Esnaph Circle to advising group with no real power. Instead the War Council was formed of people loyal to King Loren. Those were three war-prefects and King himself whose word was final on all decisions.

New Army

War Council upgrades Civil Guard to Army and remaining Army to Silver Shields.

These are events that marked beginning of war.

-50 The Expedition

King Bondar Ironspike the Charger decided to attack Troglodytes core. War Council was against I but he was the King. However he decided that all must go on their free will. Dwarves responded in great numbers wishing to end this war once and for all. There were 8 legions that followed king Bondar in the darkness of Troglodytes world. None has returned and nothing was heard of them since.

-49 The Government

With King Bondar one all authority was transferred to War Council. There could be no king they said before we know for shore that King Tulin is dead.

-15 The Rising

Young Prince and would be King Kotrel II Ironspike becomes War Prefect of StarSpire Thema.

Current situation:

Dwarven state is fighting this war for the last 200 hundred years. All threw no territory is lost and it is even expanding the number of Dwarves is decreasing constantly. Once a nation of about 180.000 citizens they are degraded to about 90.000. Dwarves are winning most of the battles but loosing the war and they know it.

The Stone - Wisdom

I already had some insight before I saw it. They said that it was built by giants and elements for all races of Abora long time ago. So, I was expecting something big but nothing I was told or imagined could prepare me for what I saw. This was a true gem of this world. From the distance I could see high towers and mighty walls and as we approached the beauty and precision of the work stunned me. There were so many details, so many balconies, bridges, arcs, ornaments were all around but not too many, they were just here to show and present splendor of Abora itself, it showed power and might, beauty and elegance. The craftsmanship was unseen so far, best of our kind could not do it better.

As we neared the gate I was able to determine something about its defense. It was very good, if someone wishes to take this town by force he’ll have to be really powerful. The whole city was built in and on the cliff. Somebody would say that it is like ShadowCliff but be shore that non of those haven’t seen Stone-Wisdom. Imagine a cliff, about 150 yards, from the top of it (and that can be seen from the great distance) runs waterfall with its omnipresent rainbow and peculiar quietness (some magic must be on work here). About 100 yards to the left there is a single tower that is about same height as the cliff itself. It’s doted with slitholes, little openings, and small windows from the 20 yards and up. Right of it, to the fall, there is a stone wall, about 20 yards high, incorporated in it is a great stone gate right next to the tower. Up on that gate there is an inscription:

Once we have passed the gate and tunnel that is right after it (I noted many slits on the roof and walls) we entered a large yard. From here we could see that the front of town is a cliff itself. The tower is connected with the cliff with many rope bridges that could be easily cut if there is need to abandon it. After the yard there is another gate which is entrance to the city, and which is even more massive than previous. I need not to say that there are slits, balconies and windows that show a lot of opportunity for ranged fire against intruders in the yard.

Upon seeing all this I already started to make a plan of distribution of my soldiers but I was distracted as we entered the city itself. Incredibly decorated doors, walls, light was coming from stones that was placed on special holders all the way, discreet heat was coming from the floor making perfect temperature. Hall after hall, with many tunnels going left and right I came to the Hart of the Stone-Wisdom, Amfriteather of gigantic proportions with all different kinds of seats. Rough estimation brought me to many thousand seats here. In the middle of it there was a round table. Many seats were around it and they looked like tree stumps but I heard that they adjust to the person who uses them in a way that is more comfortable for them. This supposed to be the center of the defense! I don’t know. As far as I am concerned, my center of defense will be on the walls and that’s it.

Further investigation revealed that on the other side of the city is a great plateau with orchards and lots of fertile soil, there is a beautiful mountain lake too. I guess this comes handy if the long siege is on the front.

Biology of Dwarf:

Base chance for fertility of female dwarf is 22%. Length of pregnancy is 15 months. Chance for twins is 1 in 1000. Dwarves average life span about 350 years, becoming adolescent in about 20 years which is marked by a ceremony that promotes child to a grown-up.

Who’s Who in NaragInbar:

Kotrel 2 Ironspike ((Kotrel II Ironspike)

Prince of Dwarves (-84 - …) and War Prefect of StarSpire thema.( -15). Son of Bondar Ironspike the Charger. Only legal pretend to Crown.

Since he become War Prefect he started to work toward the Crown. Other War Prefect opposed him but army liked him because he was with the army all the time, always in first lines like true Ironspike. However with time he managed to persuade Esnaph circle that he could end the war if they help him to become a king. The Elemental Court was supporting him and War Prefect Noetrokim Darktorn suddenly changed his mind for the benefit of the new King. Finally Kotrel II decided to proclaim himself king. All is settled and arranged for the Tog of Great Junction.

Subprefect of StarSpire thema and cousin Of His Majesty Prince Kotrel II Ironspike the Prefect of StarSpire Thema.

Very close to his cousin he is also advisor and best friend of young Prince. Together they are plotting to take over the crown that rightfully belongs to Kotrel. Tolin was sent to a mission to retrieve ancient Elven artifact together with young Elven Prince Theorit Darkwalker and some friends. Hey made journey to sacred elven land where they managed to subdue some gang of thieves who tried to murder them from an ambush. They retrieved the medallion and went for Elven capital to claim the right on the Throne.
